For most students the question of when to have children is rarely if ever discussed. Why is it that we can be professionally prepared for a career after education but we are never encouraged to discuss having a family and when might be the ideal time to do so? This discussion will look at how some artists navigate education and family life, and why it is so important to get children on the agenda at art school.

Artist Mercedes Ferrari is currently studying full time for a Foundation Degree in Fine Art at the University of Brighton, she is a mother to a 19 month daughter.
Saskia Neary is currently studying part time for an MA in Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths. She has a two year old daughter. Annabel Fraser is an associate lecturer on the BA graphic design course at Solent University in Southampton. As well as her design work she edits the FuelRCA website – professional practice programme at the RCA, one day per week. She has no children yet.
